Catherine Ryan loses High Court salary application

By Fionn Kelly

This report is a localnews.ie summary based on public court reporting and records; sources are listed below.

Catherine Ryan was refused an order requiring Bank of Ireland to continue paying her salary by the High Court on 17 June 2016, pending her legal action over her dismissal. The court said it could not find that she had shown a strong case likely to succeed, given conflicting evidence between the parties. Ryan’s proceedings concern claims that her role was changed, that she was isolated and that her dismissal followed an unsuccessful probationary period. Bank of Ireland denies those claims and says her employment was validly terminated for performance reasons.

Mr Justice Paul Gilligan directed that the dispute proceed to a full hearing as soon as possible and fixed it for the opening of the next law term in October. Ryan is seeking orders including her return to employment or damages, while the bank contests her application.
