This report is a localnews.ie summary based on public court reporting and records; sources are listed below.

Cathal Crotty was jailed for assault causing harm by the Court of Appeal on 23 January 2025, receiving a three-year sentence with the final year suspended.

The court quashed the wholly suspended sentence imposed in June 2024 after finding it unduly lenient. Crotty had pleaded guilty to assault causing harm at Limerick Circuit Criminal Court for the attack on Natasha O’Brien on O’Connell Street in Limerick in May 2022.

The Court of Appeal imposed a four-year headline sentence, reduced to three years for mitigation, with the final 12 months suspended on condition of good behaviour for one year. Crotty was taken into custody immediately.

In July 2026, the Irish Examiner reported that Crotty was to be released early after serving over a year and a half of the sentence, citing good behaviour in prison as the reason according to sources.
