This report is a localnews.ie summary based on public court reporting and records; sources are listed below.

Detective Cathal Brennan’s settled High Court employment dispute came before Mr Justice Senan Allen on 2 March 2022. The court made declarations confirming his appointment and his right to continue in the role.

With the consent of all parties, the court declared that Brennan had been validly appointed as Regional Safety Officer for National Support Services (Special Crime Operations) in February 2011. It also declared that he was entitled to continue in the role, subject to the terms and conditions of his Garda service.

Brennan had challenged being told in 2017 that he would be stood down and would need to reapply. The State parties had denied his claims.

The parties also agreed that an order for the defendants to pay his legal costs on the Circuit Court scale could be made and that the proceedings could be struck out.
