Gavin Quinn and his brother Lee Quinn pleaded guilty to lesser charges in a case involving Garda Alan Murphy at the Central Criminal Court. The proceedings were reported on 3 March 2022.

Gavin Quinn, 27, of Tyrone Place, Inchicore, Dublin, pleaded not guilty to attempting to murder Garda Murphy at St Vincent’s Street West, Inchicore, Dublin 8, on 30 March 2020. He also pleaded not guilty to assaulting the garda knowing he was a peace officer acting in that capacity, or being reckless as to whether he was.

Lee Quinn, 26, of Keeper Road, Drimnagh, Dublin, entered a special plea of not guilty to attempted murder but guilty to assault causing Garda Murphy harm on the same date. He also pleaded not guilty to a separate peace-officer assault charge and to possessing a knife as an offensive weapon with intent to unlawfully injure on that date.

A jury had been sworn in earlier that week. Before the trial was due to begin on 3 March 2022, Anne-Marie Lawlor SC, for the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), told trial judge Ms Justice Eileen Creedon that a new indictment was being served on both men.

Gavin Quinn pleaded guilty under the new indictment to assaulting a peace officer in the execution of his duty on 30 March 2020. Lee Quinn pleaded guilty to attempting to cause serious harm to Garda Murphy on that date.

The DPP accepted both pleas. Ms Justice Creedon remanded both men in custody until 23 May for sentencing, pending background reports.
