Brian O'Grady jailed for cannabis supply offence

Brian O'Grady was resentenced to five years in prison, with the final two-and-a-half years suspended, by the Court of Appeal on 19 July 2018 for possessing cannabis resin for sale or supply. The offence involved delivering cannabis worth €122,000 at an Aldi car park in Finglas, Dublin, to help pay a family member’s drug debt.
The Court of Appeal found that the original wholly suspended sentence was unduly lenient and imposed the revised sentence after a review sought by the Director of Public Prosecutions. The court said O’Grady’s involvement in the serious criminal activity could not be treated as being at the lower level, despite his difficult family background and motivation to assist his brother.
