Brian Jackson was fined €3,000 and disqualified from driving for two years at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court on 21 March 2025 after a collision that left a motorcyclist with serious injuries. Judge Patricia Ryan directed that the fine be paid within six months and that the disqualification begin in April 2025.

A jury convicted Jackson, 63, of Cherrywood Road, Cabinteely, Co Dublin, of careless driving causing serious bodily harm. He had initially faced a charge of dangerous driving causing serious bodily harm.

The collision happened on 9 December 2019 on Cromwellsfort Road, Walkinstown, as Jackson was halfway through a U-turn and the motorbike was travelling in the same direction. Garda Naoise Berry agreed with defence counsel Kieran Kelly BL that Jackson was entitled to make the U-turn at that location, although the jury found he was careless.

The motorcyclist suffered serious internal injuries and was in a coma for five weeks. In a victim impact statement, he said he needed daily medication and described the permanent effect on his ability to live as a “life sentence”. Judge Ryan said his injuries were an aggravating factor.

Mr Kelly said Jackson was remorseful and that compensation had been paid following a civil case. He asked the court not to disqualify Jackson, saying he needed to drive for work. Judge Ryan said the compensation had no relevance to the criminal case. She considered Jackson’s personal circumstances, work record and absence of previous convictions.
