Brian and Mary O'Shaughnessy are seeking damages in the High Court over their home being demolished without notice, reported on 14 January 2015.
Their single-storey property at Annaholty, Birdhill, County Tipperary, was cleared on 6 September 2006 during construction of the Limerick-Nenagh dual carriageway.
The couple are suing Limerick County Council, the National Roads Authority, engineering companies and Midland Fencing Ltd.
The defendants deny negligence, while the council and authority accept the house was wrongfully demolished and compensation is due.
The case before Mr Justice Donald Binchy was expected to last several weeks, with the couple also seeking exemplary damages.
