Brendan Treanor was refused bail by the Special Criminal Court on 24 June 2022 over a charge of participating in the Lordship Credit Union robbery in County Louth.
Mr Justice Michael MacGrath, delivering the ruling of the three-judge court, said there was a real risk of interference with witnesses if bail were granted. The court also accepted an objection under Section 2 of the Bail Act, based on fears that he might commit a further serious offence if released.
Treanor’s lawyers had argued that keeping him in custody away from his newborn son offended his dignity. His trial had been postponed to January, with the Director of Public Prosecutions seeking to try him alongside James Flynn for the same robbery.
