Breifne O'Brien ordered to pay €16.2m loan debt

By Tadhg O'Sullivan

This report is a localnews.ie summary based on public court reporting and records; sources are listed below.

Breifne O'Brien was ordered to pay IBRC €16.2m over unpaid loans in the High Court, reported on 13 February 2015. The loans were advanced by Irish Nationwide Building Society between 2002 and 2006 for investment properties, according to the report.

High Court President Nicholas Kearns dismissed O'Brien's arguments that he lacked time to prepare, and that freezing orders or alleged reckless lending provided an arguable defence. O'Brien was also serving a seven-year prison sentence after pleading guilty to deception and theft offences involving about €8.5m.
