A judge at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court set a 22-month sentence for a boy who robbed an off-duty garda, but deferred it for a year under strict conditions. The proceedings were reported on 27 June 2025.

The boy pleaded guilty to one count of robbery of the man at Camden Road, Dublin 8. The robbery took place on 22 January 2024, when the boy was 14. He had no previous convictions.

The court heard that an older man punched the victim to the ground before the boy kicked him repeatedly in the head. They took his phone, two passports, a garda ID card and bank cards, then returned to check his pockets; the boy kicked him again as he lay motionless. Garda Shane Monahan said they did not know the victim was a garda. The victim was hospitalised, and the boy later told gardaí he did not have much memory of the assault.

The boy’s social worker said social workers had believed his life was under threat. Shortly before the attack, they had recommended emergency special care for him, but no bed was available. She said a bed was found after the assault and that he was doing well in care. His counsel, James Dwyer SC, said the boy had expressed remorse and regret.

Judge Elma Sheahan noted the boy’s recent progress but said his improvements were still very recent and she wanted to ensure he was serious about rehabilitation. She required him to reside in his current care setting and follow all directions from the Probation Service and Child and Family Agency. She adjourned the case to June 2026 and said any breach would result in him being brought back to court and sentenced.
