Boy A and Boy B were convicted of murdering Ana Kriégel on 18 June 2019. They killed the 14-year-old at Glenwood House in Lucan, Co Dublin, on 14 May 2018, when both boys were 13.
Boy A had pleaded not guilty to murder and sexual assault involving serious violence. Boy B had pleaded not guilty to murder. The proceedings were reported on 22 June 2019.
The Irish Times reported that nearly all the evidence against the boys was circumstantial. Forensic testing found Ana’s blood in nine locations on Boy A’s boots. Forensics expert John Hoade said this showed that Boy A either assaulted Anastasia Kriégel or was in very close proximity when she was assaulted.
Boy A’s barrister, Patrick Gageby, argued that the boots and clothing had been obtained under false pretences. Mr Justice Paul McDermott rejected the challenge, saying gardaí had taken them as part of an investigation into a serious assault.
Other evidence included CCTV footage, specialised tape and items found in a backpack. The report said a mask found in the backpack had been made for a school project and used by Boy A at Halloween.
