Barry Grogan pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to careless driving causing the death of Martina Loughlin. The proceedings were reported on 18 January 2019.

Judge Martin Nolan sentenced Grogan to one year’s imprisonment, suspending the entire sentence for one year on condition that he keep the peace and be of good behaviour. He also disqualified Grogan from driving for four years, starting on 18 March 2019.

Grogan’s truck struck Loughlin’s broken-down car on the M50 near the Lucan junction on 11 November 2015. She was pronounced dead on 14 November 2015.

Judge Nolan took account of Grogan’s guilty plea, co-operation, voluntary statement to gardaí, lack of previous convictions, good work history and remorse. He also considered that Grogan would lose his job as a result of the driving disqualification.
