Barry Grey was sentenced to three years in prison, with the final year suspended, for two counts of assault causing harm. Judge Eugene O’Kelly backdated the sentence to when Grey entered custody in March.

Grey pleaded guilty to the two charges. The incident at The Barracks pub in Carlow occurred on June 25, 2023, after frustration over a vaping machine escalated into violence. The proceedings were reported on May 30, 2025.

The judge recognised Grey’s remorse and cooperation. His defence highlighted injuries affecting his rugby career and a prescription intended to manage his mood, and said he had sought to make amends through financial compensation, counselling and work in the prison kitchen.
