Carlow man sentenced to two years for sexually abusing younger cousin

This report is a localnews.ie summary based on public court reporting and records; sources are listed below.

A man from Carlow has been jailed for two years after pleading guilty at the Central Criminal Court to two counts of oral rape and one count of sexually assaulting his younger cousin. The offences occurred between January 2017 and June 2018, when he was 13 or 14 and the girl was 10 or 11. He cannot be named to protect her identity.

The court heard that the abuse took place on three occasions while the girl was visiting family homes in County Carlow. The judge imposed a sentence of two years and ten months, suspending the final ten months. He said the sentence reflected that the defendant was a child at the time and had pleaded guilty at an early stage. The Probation Service assessed his risk of reoffending as low, but said it could rise if he did not continue with support and treatment.
