Anthony Hussey lost his appeal against the severity of a 13-year prison sentence after breaking into a 73-year-old woman’s home and raping her twice. The Court of Appeal dismissed the appeal on a Monday. The proceedings were reported on 3 July 2018.
Hussey pleaded guilty at the Central Criminal Court to two categories of rape. On 25 July 2016, Mr Justice Patrick McCarthy sentenced him to 13 years’ imprisonment and ordered five years of post-release supervision.
Justice John Hedigan described the offence as one of the most serious rape cases to have come before the three-judge court. The court found the sentence severe but within the range available to the sentencing judge.
