Andrew Shannon conviction upheld for criminal damage

This report is a localnews.ie summary based on public court reporting and records; sources are listed below.

Andrew Shannon’s appeal against his criminal-damage conviction was dismissed by the Court of Appeal on 29 July 2016. The conviction concerned damage to a Claude Monet painting at the National Gallery in Dublin on 29 June 2012. The court found that the trial judge was entitled to refuse separate trials and to keep the jury in place after directing acquittals on two counts relating to paintings at Dublin’s Shelbourne Hotel. The conviction was therefore held to be safe. Shannon had received a six-year sentence, with the final 15 months suspended, but this judgment dealt only with his conviction appeal.
