This report is a localnews.ie summary based on public court reporting and records; sources are listed below.

Andrew Gibney was sentenced to eight years in prison, with one year suspended, for manslaughter at the Central Criminal Court on 13 December 2017. The proceedings were reported on 13 December 2017.

Gibney had pleaded not guilty to murdering Gerard Burnett at Castlecurragh Vale, Mulhuddart, Dublin 15, on 21 August 2012. A jury found him not guilty of murder but guilty of manslaughter in November 2017.

Gibney admitted stabbing Burnett three times. Mr Justice Paul Butler said technical evidence established that the three wounds inflicted by Gibney were not fatal, were shallower than the other stab wounds and were to Burnett's side.

Mr Justice Butler said he accepted the jury's finding that Gibney did not intend to kill or cause serious injury. He backdated the sentence to 28 August 2012, when Gibney went into custody.
