Alan Stone was jailed for 16 months by Judge Martin Nolan at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court for theft and damaging a Garda interview room. The proceedings were reported on 18 November 2015.
Stone pleaded guilty to stealing two boxes of Fairy Liquid Tablets from Centra, Dame Street, and damaging an interview room by defecating on its floor. The offences took place on 28 April 2015. The stolen tablets were worth €16.
The report said Stone had 165 previous convictions, mainly for theft. Garda John Altendorf told Róisín Lacey BL, prosecuting, that it was his understanding that Stone regularly stole detergent products to sell on to fund his chronic heroin addiction.
Pieter Le Vert BL, defending, said Stone was mortified and disgusted by his actions. He said Stone’s heroin abuse followed the loss of his Dublin Port job and his parents’ separation in 2008, and that Stone subsequently became homeless. Counsel said his family were now willing to accept him back into their homes because he was stable on a methadone programme in prison and was due to be placed on an enhanced regime.
Judge Martin Nolan said Stone had “a good chance of reform” if he managed to stay away from drugs.
