Alan McNamara pleaded not guilty to the murder of Andrew O'Donoghue at the Central Criminal Court in Dublin. The charge concerned Mr O'Donoghue's death at Mountfune, County Limerick, on 20 June 2015.
Robert Cusack, the son of Mr McNamara's wife Mary McNamara, pleaded not guilty to impeding Mr McNamara's apprehension, knowing or believing him to have committed a serious offence.
Mary McNamara told the court that, after an encounter outside a pub on 19 June 2015 in which her husband's motorcycle-club waistcoat was taken, three men arrived outside their home. She said one carried a gun and the men threatened to kill her husband and burn down their house. She later named the men in court. One of them, Jim 'Bob' McInerney, denied that the alleged incident happened.
Mr McInerney said he saw Mr McNamara carrying a short-barrelled shotgun and shoot Mr O'Donoghue as he tried to close the clubhouse gate. Another witness, Derek Geary, said he saw a man approach with what looked like a sawn-off shotgun, heard a shot and saw that Mr O'Donoghue had been hit.
The proceedings were reported on 17 July 2017. The trial was continuing before Mr Justice Paul McDermott and a jury.
