Alan Jones loses appeal against 13-year robbery sentence

By Ruairí Dolan

This report is a localnews.ie summary based on public court reporting and records; sources are listed below.

Alan Jones lost his appeal against a 13-year sentence, with the final three years suspended, at the Court of Appeal on 16 November 2017. The sentence arose from convictions for four robberies, one attempted robbery and an offence under firearms legislation.

The court held that it could identify no error of principle in the sentencing judges’ approach and dismissed the appeal. Two previously suspended sentences had been reactivated, while the overall sentence also covered later robbery and attempted robbery convictions.

The judgment records that Jones had a long-standing heroin addiction, previous convictions dating from age 15, and 34 previous convictions, including six for robbery.
