Alan Hanley had his rape conviction overturned by the Court of Appeal, reported on 11 June 2018. The court directed a retrial after finding the trial judge had failed to give the jury a corroboration warning.
Hanley had been sentenced to 12 and a half years for each of three rape offences and five years for assault. The offences were reported to have occurred at a house in Limerick city on the night of 4 and 5 May 2012.
He was remanded in custody pending the next list, when dates for the retrial were to be fixed. The appeal court said it could not be satisfied that the missing warning had not affected the trial outcome.
