Alan Graham jailed for facilitating attempted murder

Alan Graham was sentenced at the Central Criminal Court on 12 March 2021 to 11 years in prison, with the final year suspended, for his role in an organised crime gang’s attempted murder of Lee Boylan. Mr Justice Michael White backdated the sentence to 17 June 2019, when Graham went into custody.

Graham pleaded guilty in January 2021 to knowing of the existence of a criminal organisation and participating in activities intended to facilitate its attempted murder of Boylan, or being reckless as to that. The offence was at Blakestown Road, Mulhuddart, Dublin 15, on 6 March 2019.

Prosecution counsel Pauline Walley SC said the State wished to enter a nolle prosequi, a decision not to proceed, on a separate charge of attempted murder.

The court heard that Boylan was shot three times in the shoulder and neck while sitting in his van. His wounds formed an abnormal connection between an artery and a vein that stopped him bleeding out. The three bullets remained in his body.

The judge described the attack as well planned and said it was carried out at the behest of a criminal organisation that believed Boylan had been involved in a previous attack. He said there was a strong possibility Graham had become involved because he owed a drug debt. The judge identified Graham’s early guilty plea, personal circumstances and possible pressure over the debt as the main mitigating factors.

The proceedings were reported on 12 March 2021.
