This report is a localnews.ie summary based on public court reporting and records; sources are listed below.

Alan Ellis was sentenced to four years, with the final year suspended, at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court on 20 December 2018 after pleading guilty to threatening to kill or cause serious harm to a prison officer and producing a blade during a dispute at Mountjoy Prison.

The court heard that Ellis swung a blade moulded into a toothbrush at the officer while he was delivering toilet paper, and the blade struck the officer’s fleece. Judge Patricia Ryan backdated the sentence to 21 July 2017 and directed Ellis to keep the peace and be of good behaviour for three years after release.
