The High Court rejected Italy’s request to extradite Aisha Ahmed over alleged cocaine importing on 8 February 2016. Ahmed, a mother-of-six, had been arrested at her home in Sundale Parade, Tallaght, Dublin 24, under a European Arrest Warrant. The warrant alleged she helped lead an organisation importing, selling and distributing cocaine in Italy between 1999 and 2000.
Ahmed had been convicted in absentia in 2005 and sentenced by the Court of Naples to 20 years in prison, according to the report. Ms Justice Aileen Donnelly ruled that her surrender was prohibited under the European Arrest Warrant Act 2003, as amended. The court heard that Ahmed had not been made aware of an alleged scheduled trial, with notice served on her defence lawyer. Her €1,000 bail money was ordered to be returned.
