After insanity verdict, Henry McGowan committed to Central Mental Hospital for treatment

By Niamh Kearney

This report is a localnews.ie summary based on public court reporting and records; sources are listed below.

A Central Criminal Court judge committed Henry McGowan to the Central Mental Hospital to continue treatment, after a jury found him not guilty of murdering his father by reason of insanity. The jury returned the special verdict on February 12, and the judge made the hospital order on February 26.

A psychiatrist told the court McGowan has a severe relapsing mental illness and could deteriorate without appropriate care. The court heard he accepted his diagnosis and need for treatment and was committed until a further order; his condition is to be reviewed at intervals of no more than six months.
