Adam O’Mara received a fully suspended two-and-a-half-year prison sentence from Judge Mary Ellen Ring at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court. The proceedings were reported on 6 February 2015.

He pleaded guilty to unlawful use of a white Toyota Dyna, dangerous driving and driving with no insurance. The offences occurred on the N1 Motorway at Drogheda on 8 February 2012.

Judge Ring disqualified O’Mara from driving for four years and ordered him to keep the peace and be of good behaviour for two and a half years. He was also ordered to comply with Probation Services and directions concerning training, education and drug treatment.

The report said O’Mara was 17 when he led gardaí on a 40-minute motorway chase in a stolen truck, trying to ram a Garda car four times and weaving through heavy traffic.

Garda James Mulhern agreed with James Dwyer, defending, that O’Mara had returned to Ireland from Australia to deal with the case. O’Mara’s mother told the court that she was in financial trouble when the offending occurred and her son was associating with negative peers. Mr Dwyer said O’Mara had stopped using cannabis.

Judge Ring noted that O’Mara appeared to have taken steps to address his drug misuse. A probation order showed that he had completed a welding course and applied for further training.
