New jury sworn-in for trial of husband accused of murdering wife

A fresh jury was sworn in at the Central Criminal Court on Thursday following the discharge of a previous panel in the trial of a man accused of murdering his wife. Rafal Karaczyn, aged 34 and from Crozon Park in Sligo, faces a charge of murder in relation to the death of his wife at their family home between 29 April and 1 May 2018. The original jury of seven women and five men heard evidence over two days before being discharged by Ms Justice Eileen Creedon, who cited unspecified reasons preventing the trial's continuation. The jurors were excused from future jury service for five years. Mr Karaczyn subsequently indicated a plea of not guilty to murder but guilty to manslaughter. A replacement jury of identical composition was empanelled by Mr Justice Paul McDermott, with the trial expected to last approximately two weeks.
