"Don't say anything, they are trying to stitch us up": trial hears of murder accused's arrest

A 30-year-old man from Cartron Estate in Sligo has pleaded not guilty to murder but guilty to manslaughter in connection with the death of a 59-year-old man at New Apartments on Holborn Street, Sligo, on 2nd and 3rd August 2015. The Central Criminal Court heard that when the accused and his sister were arrested on suspicion of murder, he shouted at her not to speak, alleging police were attempting to frame them. A sergeant from Sligo Garda Station gave evidence that the accused was extremely agitated and aggressive during his arrest, though he clarified the behaviour was directed at objects rather than people. The accused's plea to manslaughter was not accepted by the prosecution, and the trial is proceeding before Justice Paul McDermott and a jury.
