Seamus McGrane, aged 63, of Little Road, Dromiskin, County Louth, has been remanded in custody pending sentencing at the Special Criminal Court on 7 December. McGrane was convicted last month of directing the activities of an unlawful organisation styling itself the Irish Republican Army between 19 April and 13 May 2015, and of IRA membership between 18 January 2010 and 13 May 2015. He had denied both charges. The court heard evidence of audio surveillance recordings made at The Coachman's Inn on the Sword's Road in Dublin, in which McGrane allegedly directed operations involving explosives and provided instructions to a co-accused regarding bomb-making materials and methodology. The prosecution outlined references to a planned operation timed to coincide with a State visit on 19 May 2015, which prosecutors submitted held military significance. McGrane is only the second person convicted of directing terrorism in the State. His co-accused received a five-and-a-half-year sentence.
