Suspended sentence for man who sexually assaulted niece

A 40-year-old man from Dublin who has since relocated to Sligo received a suspended sentence at the Central Criminal Court for sexually assaulting his niece over two decades ago. The defendant pleaded guilty to three counts of sexual assault occurring between April and September 1992, when the victim was eight years old. The abuse took place at a Dublin residence during babysitting occasions. At sentencing, the victim delivered a statement describing the lasting psychological impact on herself and her family. Ms Justice Margaret Heneghan imposed a two-year sentence suspended for three years, taking into account the defendant's guilty pleas, written apology, and current family circumstances, as well as the profound effects on the complainant.
