The Labour Court has upheld a finding that Dr Ibrahim Khalil’s unfair dismissal complaint against University College Dublin was not well founded. The determination was signed on 1 October 2021.
Khalil argued that he should not have been made redundant and was entitled to a contract of indefinite duration. The university said his research post ended when project funding ceased and his fixed-term contract expired. His contract ended in February 2020, and he declined a redundancy payment.
The Court found the case fell within a statutory exclusion for certain signed fixed-term or specified-purpose contracts when the term expires or the purpose ends. It therefore upheld the Adjudication Officer’s decision that the complaint was not well founded.
