Labour Court rejects Liga Skuja’s minimum wage appeal

The Labour Court found Liga Skuja’s National Minimum Wage Act complaint was not well founded and affirmed the Rights Commissioner’s decision, in a determination dated 15 January 2014. Skuja, an accommodation assistant at Slieve Russell Hotel Property Limited, argued that the employer could not count board towards her hourly rate because it was not declared for tax or social welfare purposes. The Court found no support in the Act for that argument. It said basic pay and the monetary value of board together exceeded the €8.65 hourly minimum wage in force at the time.
