The Labour Court recommended that BMD & Co Ltd increase the shift premium for eight maintenance fitters from 25% to 33.3%, from the date of its recommendation, signed on 20 March 2020. The workers, represented by Unite the Union and Connect Trade Union, worked an eight-day rota with two 12-hour days and two 12-hour nights. The unions said a 33.3% premium was the industry norm for maintenance fitters on this pattern. BMD said the existing premium, paid lunch break and paid travel time together exceeded that level. The Court accepted the unions’ submission that the norm for this night-work rota was basic pay plus a 33.3% premium and recommended conceding the claim.
