The Labour Court has recommended that Galway County Council and the Services Industrial Professional Technical Union return to conciliation over annual leave arrangements for Galway-based retained firefighters. The recommendation was signed on 1 July 2019. The Court said both sides agreed that two teams of seven were the optimum arrangement to ensure staff could take annual leave. It recommended discussions on the first eight points of management’s proposal, including ending automatic daytime alerts to the off-duty crew subject to staffing and operational conditions. The Court also said management was obliged to ensure staff took leave in the year it accrued, subject to carry-over arrangements, and recommended talks on clearing accumulated leave and preventing it building up again.
