Labour Court recommends fact-finding on day supervisors’ pay parity claim

The Labour Court recommended that Multi Packaging Solutions Ltd and the Services Industrial Professional Technical Union agree facts about day supervisors’ calls for support after managers leave the site, as part of a dispute over their night supervisor allowance. The union said day supervisors had the same responsibilities as the night supervisor during those hours and sought the same allowance. The employer argued the night supervisor had greater responsibility because management support was less available during unsociable hours. The Court noted the day supervisors received a 10% allowance and the permanent night supervisor received 20%. Neither side had records of calls to managers after they left or of managers returning to the site. The recommendation, signed on 21 June 2019, asked the parties to agree what happened over the previous 12 months, including when managers were commonly on site until 6.30pm or 7pm, then try to resolve the dispute locally.
