Labour Court recommends €500 payment to Tesco workers over paid breaks

By Saoirse Doyle

Labour Court ·

The Labour Court recommended a €500 payment in tax-efficient vouchers to workers at Tesco Ireland Limited’s Tullow store after a dispute over paid breaks. The recommendation was dated 10 January 2018. Mandate Trade Union said workers had not received contractual paid 15-minute breaks between 2008 and 2013 and sought full retrospective payment. Tesco said management believed workers had received breaks, while acknowledging that the store did not have proper clocking arrangements. The Court said there were no records to prove or disprove the claim definitively and noted the long delay. It did not recommend applying the formulae used in earlier disputes, instead recommending the €500 payment.
