Labour Court recommends extra two weeks’ pay in dismissal dispute

By Gráinne Nolan

Labour Court ·

The Labour Court recommended that Wood Financial Services Ltd pay a worker an additional two weeks’ pay to settle a dispute over her dismissal after she failed internal exams. The recommendation was signed on 29 March 2018. The worker said she had not been told that passing the exams was required before she started and was not allowed to resit them despite verbal assurances. The employer said it had to meet Financial Regulator standards and had no alternative but to end her employment after she failed the required exams. The Court said the manner of termination fell below the standard expected of a good employer. The employer had already agreed to pay two weeks’ pay and outstanding expenses; the Court recommended a further two weeks’ pay in full and final settlement. The worker had agreed to be bound by the recommendation.
