The Labour Court recommended that Irish Rail continue paying Permanent Way Inspectors the 2.5% call-out allowance for 2017 and 2018 under the established practice. The recommendation was signed on 12 February 2018. The Services Industrial Professional Technical Union and the Transport Salaried Staffs’ Association said remote telephone consultations should count towards the threshold of more than 18 call-outs. Irish Rail said inspectors had to attend in person. The Court distinguished the 2.5% call-out bonus from the 10% on-call allowance, which covered remote calls. It recommended that the appropriate payments be made by 1 April 2018 and 1 April 2019, and that from 1 January 2019 only physical call-outs count.
