The Labour Court recommended that University College Dublin give staff within 10 years of retirement the option to pay pension contribution arrears over 10 years, with the University bearing the measure’s additional costs. The recommendation was signed on 7 July 2017. The dispute was brought by the Services Industrial Professional Technical Union on behalf of its members. The Court found that the University had failed to act between 2005 and 2015 on an instruction to provide part-time staff with access to the pension scheme. Staff were given access in 2015, by which time contribution arrears had accrued. The Court found the proposed arrangements did not adequately provide for staff nearing retirement.
