The Labour Court recommended that Irish Cement Limited trading as Irish Cement increase workers’ pay by 2% for 12 months from January 2016. It also recommended that both sides observe their existing pay-restoration agreement and reassess restoration in 2017. The recommendation was signed on 16 March 2016. The Services Industrial Professional Technical Union, Unite the Union and Technical Engineering and Electrical Union sought an 11% increase, including restoration of a 6% pay cut and a further 5% pay-round increase. Irish Cement said its agreement with the unions covered pay from 2014 to 2019. The unions cited rising production, domestic-market growth and CRH’s profits; the company said domestic demand remained weak and exports faced low margins.
