The Labour Court recommended that Smartply Europe Ltd's offer be amended to provide 2% pay increases effective 1 January 2013 and 1 January 2014, with the agreement expiring on 31 December 2014. It did not recommend an increase for 2012. The recommendation followed a pay claim by the Services Industrial Professional Technical Union and the Technical, Engineering and Electrical Union, which sought a phased 5% increase. Smartply Europe Ltd opposed the claim, saying it could threaten the company's future viability, and offered a smaller increase it said it could afford. The recommendation was signed on 21 November 2014.
