The Labour Court recommended that John Crane Limited continue its extra day of leave for workers with two years’ perfect attendance through 2013 and 2014, then end the facility. The recommendation was signed on 14 July 2014. The Services Industrial Professional Technical Union argued the leave was part of workers’ terms and conditions and sought to reverse its removal. John Crane said it was a discretionary benefit, introduced on an ex gratia basis, and had been discontinued to reduce costs. The Court said the arrangement was discretionary and should not be treated as a condition of employment.
