The Labour Court recommended that Boc Gases protect drivers’ earnings and working-day length for three months as it introduced a cylinder-scanning system. The recommendation was signed on 9 May 2014. The Services Industrial Professional Technical Union said Individual Cylinder Control could lengthen working days and reduce earnings. It sought a 3% pay rise for specified drivers, pay parity for VCH drivers and an overtime premium for articulated drivers making deliveries. Boc Gases said the change was part of normal ongoing work practices and offered 15 minutes’ extra paid time each day. The Court said the union should co-operate with the change without further conditions, but recommended that the company protect workers from unintended reductions in earnings or longer days during the first three months.
