In 2014, the Labour Court recommended that two former Archive Assistants at the National University of Ireland Galway receive three weeks’ pay per year of service in enhanced redundancy terms. The recommendation was dated 24 February 2014. SIPTU sought retrospective incremental credit and enhanced redundancy terms for the workers, who had been employed on a Folklore Digitisation Project. The Court rejected the incremental-credit claim, accepting that their pay reflected project funding and was not aligned to a university grade. The Court recommended the enhanced redundancy payment under the Public Service Agreement, in addition to the statutory redundancy payments already received. It concluded that the agreement’s references to existing exit provisions concerned the right to make workers redundant, not the payments due.
