The Labour Court recommended that HSE West and the Services Industrial Professional Technical Union jointly refer their dispute over cleaning work at Mayo General Hospital to the Health Service Implementation Body and seek an expedited hearing. The recommendation was signed on 22 October 2012. The union said extending the cleaning contract conflicted with the Public Services Agreement 2010–2014 and that management should negotiate how support staff could provide the service. HSE West said it had tried unsuccessfully to engage with the union and needed to meet cleanliness standards in additional wards.
