The Labour Court recommended an additional redundancy payment for 19 workers represented by the Services Industrial Professional Technical Union after Carillion Irishenco Limited rejected the union’s claim. The recommendation was signed on 28 May 2012. The workers had received statutory redundancy, and the company had offered an ex-gratia payment of €800 per person, which the union refused. The Court recommended a further ex-gratia payment of two weeks’ pay per year of service, capped at €600 per week. The union said the company could afford enhanced terms and that statutory-only redundancy fell below industry norms. The company said its Civil Engineering Division had ceased trading and that funding the claim could harm its continuing Facilities Management operation.
