The Labour Court recommended that Galco Steel pay 10 workers an amount equal to one year’s lost shift premium after the company replaced rotating shifts carrying a 17.5% premium with permanent day and evening shifts. The recommendation was signed on 20 January 2012. The Services Industrial Professional Technical Union said the workers had lost 10–15% of their pay through restructuring and could not take the permanent evening shift for mainly domestic reasons. Galco Steel said all 10 had been offered that shift, which retained the premium, but none accepted. It also said it was loss-making. The Court recommended two payments: half when the union accepted the recommendation and the balance immediately before each worker’s annual summer holidays.
