The Labour Court recommended increasing the special redundancy payment for workers losing their jobs at Stena Line Ltd from €650 to €1,050 per year of service, pro rata for part-time workers. Its recommendation was signed on 16 January 2012. The Services Industrial Professional Technical Union said the redundancies were part of an outsourcing agenda and workers were losing permanent, pensionable jobs with little prospect of other work. Stena Line said it needed to remove winter costs to keep its seasonal ferry service viable. The Court also recommended that displaced staff in Dun Laoghaire have first call on jobs created when the seasonal service began, and that the company discuss those jobs’ terms with the union. The union was to accept the revised offer in full and final settlement.
