The Labour Court recommended that Morris Builders Providers Limited and Unite the Union accept two 5% pay reductions, taking effect on 1 August 2011 and 2 January 2012, as part of the company’s proposed 10% cut. The recommendation was signed on 29 July 2011. The Court also recommended compensation for workers who lost regular or rostered overtime, equal to one-and-a-half times their annual lost earnings and payable in two equal instalments. An independent assessor found the savings were needed to maintain the business and employment. Unite had offered alternatives, including reducing the working week from 39 hours to 36.
