Labour Court recommends Mayo County Council honour compensation agreement

The Labour Court recommended that Mayo County Council fully honour its agreement to compensate workers for earnings lost after the privatisation of the Castlebar Waste Water Treatment Plant. The recommendation was signed on 19 May 2011. The Services Industrial Professional Technical Union said workers had helped train the private contractor in return for compensation, including overtime and allowances, but the Council had not honoured the agreement fully and had delayed some payments. The Council cited its financial position and denied that compensatable losses had occurred. The Court found the agreement covered the dispute, the workers had fulfilled their side and the Council had benefited. It recommended that the agreement be honoured without changing its terms.
